Every question you have about postpartum hair loss answered

Postpartum hair loss is scary and real, but it is also 100% normal! It’s a symptom many first-time mothers are unaware of until it happens to them (that’s about to change ladies)!

The BondiBoost Team are here to rip the bandaid (or nappy) off, sugar-coat free. We’re giving you the complete low down on everything there is to know about this hairy (or lack thereof) situation; keep reading!

When does postpartum hair loss occur?

Postpartum hair loss generally occurs around three months post-birth (Geez, just when you were starting to feel like you again)!

How long does postpartum hair loss last?

Generally speaking, it will last anywhere for 1-6 months and no longer than 12 months. If hair loss is noticed after a 12-month timeframe, you should consult a medical professional to determine whether any other external factors are contributing to this loss.

What are the chances that postpartum hair loss will happen to me?

There’s certainly no need for alarm. It’s important to always keep in mind that postpartum hair loss is a COMPLETELY NORMAL phenomenon and will eventually stop. Most, if not all, new mothers go through it, you’ve just got to ride out the wave.

It’s also not like your hair will go from extremely thick, luscious locks to barley there strands. You’ll notice hair loss in particular areas more than others; a common area is the front sides of the forehead.

Why does postpartum hair loss occur?

You may notice that while pregnant, your hair magically became fuller, thicker and longer (almost instantly). It’s not a mirage, it really did! During pregnancy, the combination of heightened oestrogen levels + increased blood circulation stimulates hair follicles while severely minimising the usual rate of hair loss.

More hair growth + reduced (natural) hair loss = a visibly fuller, thicker head of hair.

Once bub comes, these hormone levels drop back to normal almost instantly, kick-starting your head to begin (normal) daily hair loss again. However, hair seemingly decides to catch up on the strands not lost during pregnancy as well, with many postpartum women experiencing mass hair loss all at once.

How can I help reduce postpartum hair loss?

Now, before you go entirely into a fetal position, full surrender, there are a few tips to help reduce and alleviate postpartum hair loss.

  1. Fuel your body with the right type of foods

Just like you use nutrients and vitamins from the food you eat to fuel your body, you also use them in the creation of natural hair growth. Therefore, ensuring your diet is rich in foods, whose nutritional compounds aid hair follicle stimulation, the chances of your hair growing back faster become more likely.

  1. Natural is better

If you’re in the market for hair growth, choosing to use more natural hair products on your head instead of artificial, chemically-packed products should be a top priority. While conventional hair care does the job at cleansing hair initially, they in no way add extra nourishment to strands and long-term the ‘filler’ ingredients, parabens and sulphates actually do more damage than good.

Natural shampoo and conditioners, free from sulphates, parabens & silicones, not only do wonders in cleansing hair but also nourish the scalp and hair root, maintaining healthy sebum (oil production), conditioning the perfect environment for hair growth. (Pssst! Our HG Shampoo & Conditioner is all this and more… just saying…)

PROCAPIL®? Never heard of that ingredient before? Don’t worry, we thought you might say that! Clinical studies indicate that the patented PROCAPIL® ingredient is a powerful moderator in anti-hair loss due to its anchoring abilities in the scalp. PROCAPIL® has shown to slow hair loss and improves the health of hair follicles.

Pssst! We know you want to get some of that PROCAPIL® action! Lucky for you (and your hair), BondiBoost has the patented ‘PROCAPIL®’ ingredient all to ourselves and we want to share with you!

Our PROCAPIL® Hair Tonic uses this ‘super’ ingredient to effectively stimulate hair growth and slow down hair loss.
