Vegan hair care: Inside the latest beauty movement

In the last five years, Veganism has taken the world by storm. Seriously, who would have ever thought that they would see the day where whole sections in the ‘meat aisle’ at conventional, chain supermarkets would be dedicated to ‘plant-based alternatives’.

But Veganism isn’t just about diet, rather a lifestyle. With that being said, the demand for products, especially in the beauty/cosmetic industry, to be cruelty-free and vegan is at an all-time high. Companies are now proudly displaying the leaping bunny symbol and formulating products with innovative, plant-based alternatives.

What does it mean to be a vegan beauty product?
Cosmetic/haircare products that are vegan contain absolutely no ingredients that have been derived from animals or their by-products.

What does it mean to be a cruelty-free beauty product?
Cosmetic/haircare products that are cruelty-free mean that the products are not tested on animals when being devised and formulated. Cruelty-free products can, however, still contain animal-derived ingredients and are therefore not vegan.

If a product is vegan, does it also mean it’s automatically cruelty-free?
In short answer, no. Just because a product doesn’t contain any ingredients that are derived from animals, it doesn’t mean that it’s automatically cruelty-free. Some products are ‘accidentally vegan’, meaning that the company in question never intentionally set out to create a vegan-friendly product, it just, sort of, happened!

Some vegan products are tested on animals. So this is something you need to watch out for if you are a vegan or wanting to transition to only purchasing vegan cosmetic/hair products.

Is it possible for products to be both vegan and cruelty-free?
Yes absolutely! Many companies will state on their packaging and website if their products are vegan, cruelty-free or both.

Is it better to purchase vegan cosmetics/hair products?
Yes; at least we think so! Apart from no having to kill or harm animals in their creation, using vegan cosmetic products has been found to help overall hair health.

Plant-derived ingredients contain more antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, so using plant-based, organic or vegan hair and skincare products can be better for your hair and skin, particularly if you have skin allergens or a sensitive scalp.
