We get it. Sometimes life just gets crazy and your hair care routine falls a little to the wayside. You start skimping on the hair treatments and maybe go one too many days without washing. Although there’s nothing wrong with an interim-simplified hair routine, there are definitely things that you should NOT be compensating to save some extra minutes!
Seriously though, the below list makes us Boosties totally #cringe in our chairs! Keep reading to find out the cardinal no-gos of hair.
1. Forgoing the heat protectant when using hot tools
Everyone knows the dangers of going out in the blazing sun without sunscreen but for many, this notion just doesn’t compute when reaching for our hair tools. If you’re reading this and thinking #guiltyascharged, please keep reading - you are doing potential long-term damage!
Just like sunscreen, heat protectants add a barrier of protection between the heat of the styling tool and your hair. This seals in moisture and prevents hair from becoming burnt and damaged. If you aren't applying this product before you heat style, your poor hair is getting extremely high temperatures applied directly on it. This increases the probability of your hair becoming burnt, brittle and snapping! So next time you go to add that little extra curl to your hair, spritz a heat protectant all over for a safe and damage free styling session!
2. Choosing quantity over quality
There is definitely a reason why some shampoo and conditioners are so much cheaper compared to others. Exactly like organic versus conventional, it’s all in the ingredient list! Conventional, lower-priced brands of shampoo and conditioner are often pumped full of ‘filler’ ingredients that are cheaper to produce. Whilst these ingredients still clean your hair (in the interim), they actually end up doing long-term damage.
Silicone and parabens are major culprits when it comes to this topic. Silicone is almost like rubber and/or plastic. Silicone gives the hair the illusion of shine, but it is not the shine we want—it is a fake shine from its plastic-like compounds. Silicone gets rid of frizz (temporarily) as it prevents moisture from penetrating the hair shaft. However, because of this, it’s also hard to wash out and builds up over time, weighing hair down, causing it to become limp and lifeless.
On the same wave-length as silicone, parabens are another ingredient popularly used in hair care products as they are a cheap and effective (temporarily) ingredient that removes grime and dead skin cells from the scalp. HOWEVER, to do this parabens actually strip hair follicles dry of all other important nutrients that are vital for hair health and strength.
So please, next time you step into the shower for a good ol' hair-cleanse, make sure you’re reaching for a shampoo and conditioner that are free from sulphates and silicones. They may be a little more pricey than your regular supermarket brands but they will save you big bucks long-term when you don’t have to worry about reviving your dead and damaged locks - #nobodysgottimeforthat
3. Sleeping with wet hair
If you’re guilty of hitting the hay straight after stepping out of the shower you NEED to read this!
Most people don’t know that hair is actually at its most weak when it is wet. Now, imagine your wet head of hair tossing and turning all night long on your pillow… get a nasty image of snapping strands? We certainly do!
Another side-effect of going to bed with wet hair is increased bacteria growth. The heat from your head and damp pillow (due to those wet locks) are the absolute #perfect set-up for a breeding ground of bacteria and mould - gross.com!
Psst, we’ve also got that whole paraben and silicone issue down-pat!
